Flannery Plant Hire Deploys First Electric Cat 320 Excavator in the UK

Flannery Plant Hire has introduced the UK's first Cat 320 electric medium excavator, marking a significant step in green construction initiatives.

Introduction

Flannery Plant Hire has made a notable advancement in sustainable construction by deploying the first Cat 320 electric medium excavator in the UK. This innovative machine, supplied by Finning UK & Ireland, is designed to deliver the same power and performance as traditional diesel excavators while significantly reducing noise and vibration.

Features of the Cat 320 Electric Excavator

The Cat 320 electric excavator is engineered to meet the demands of modern construction while prioritising environmental considerations. Key features include:

  • Equivalent power and performance to diesel counterparts.
  • Reduced noise and vibration levels, enhancing the working environment.

During the handover process, Finning and Caterpillar provided comprehensive training for operators, which included instruction on electric machinery, safety protocols, and user interface guidance. Additionally, a walkaround inspection was conducted to ensure operators were well-acquainted with the Cat 320 model.

Flannery's Commitment to Green Construction

Flannery Plant Hire has been proactive in its commitment to green construction, previously investing in hybrid excavators. The introduction of the Cat 320 electric excavator aligns with their ongoing efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of their operations.

Recent Developments in Flannery's Fleet

In addition to the electric excavator, Flannery has also put the UK's first Cat D6 XE dozer to work on the M4 Smart Motorway Scheme in collaboration with Balfour Beatty. This dozer features a high-drive electric drive transmission that can enhance fuel efficiency by up to 35%. After its initial 100 hours of operation, it recorded a fuel burn of 17.55 litres per hour, achieving a 24.8% fuel saving compared to standard D6 dozers.

Flannery's commitment to sustainable machinery is evident in their substantial investment plans. For 2025, they have earmarked a total of £107m for plant investment, which includes a significant order of 100 Cat excavators, 70 Cat bulldozers, 86 Cat ADT trucks, and 20 Cat rollers. Over the past four years, the company has invested an impressive £448m in its fleet.

Conclusion

The deployment of the Cat 320 electric medium excavator represents a significant milestone for Flannery Plant Hire and the UK construction industry. As they continue to lead the charge towards greener construction practices, Flannery's investments in electric and hybrid machinery are setting a new standard for sustainability in the sector.
