Balfour Beatty Vinci has successfully moved the first 170-metre section of the viaduct, which is part of a larger 700-metre structure designed to span multiple live tracks.
Engineering Challenges Ahead
The Duddeston Junction Viaduct is notable for its complexity, as it will cross over six active railway lines—three dedicated to freight and three for passenger services. The engineering team is faced with several challenges, including:
- Horizontal Curvature: The viaduct features a changing horizontal curve, which adds to the complexity of the construction.
- Gradient: The structure will have a 3% gradient, rising to approximately 12 metres above the existing railway.
- Live Tracks: The construction must proceed while ensuring the safety and functionality of the live railway lines below.
Construction Timeline
The construction of the Duddeston Junction Viaduct is expected to continue until next summer. The next phase of the project, which involves launching sections over the passenger railway, is scheduled to commence in December. Structure and Design
The viaduct will consist of 14 spans, each measuring around 55 metres, and is expected to weigh up to 6,835 tonnes upon completion. The construction process will involve:
- Progressive Sliding: Seven spans will be assembled behind the launch point and then slid forward across the existing railway.
- Crane Lifting: The remaining seven spans will be lifted into position using cranes once the structure has cleared the live tracks.
Workforce and Collaboration
A dedicated team of up to 90 engineers and operatives is currently working on the site, navigating the constraints posed by the surrounding infrastructure. HS2 senior project manager Tony Zakaria highlighted that the launch of this viaduct is a testament to the progress being made in bringing high-speed rail to Birmingham.
