Kishorn Port's Ambitious Expansion

Kishorn Port, located in Wester Ross, Scotland, is poised to secure a significant £30 million contract for the construction of a new deep-water quay. This project is part of a broader expansion initiative that aims to enhance the port's operational capabilities and support local economic growth.

Details of the New Quay

The upcoming quay, known as the East Quay, will span 150 metres in length and will be built on land that was reclaimed during an earlier £42.2 million expansion phase. This new structure will feature a water depth of 12 metres below chart datum, making it suitable for larger vessels. Key components of the construction contract will include:

• Sheet and combi piling
• Tie rods
• Precast and in-situ concrete capping beams
• Installation of bollards, ladders, lighting, and services

Additionally, the project will involve the construction of two piled mooring dolphins, complete with steel walkway bridges, enhancing the port's docking facilities.

Timeline and Job Creation

Kishorn Port Limited (KPL) is currently in the process of shortlisting up to five firms for the contract, with a formal notice expected in September and tender documents to be released in November. The aim is to award the contract by April 2027, with construction anticipated to commence in June 2027. This project is also expected to generate substantial employment opportunities, with the previous phase of expansion creating 84 jobs for up to 18 months.

Investment and Economic Impact

The expansion project at Kishorn Port has received significant backing, with Highlands and Islands Enterprise investing up to £24 million. Once fully operational, the port is projected to support approximately 1,500 jobs, bolstering the local economy and reinforcing its position as a key player in maritime operations on Scotland’s west coast.

Future Plans

Looking ahead, KPL has ambitious plans for further development. The ongoing expansion has already increased the site by 9 hectares, bringing the total laydown space to about 17 hectares. Future phases include plans for a 500-metre deep-water quay with depths of up to 20 metres, which will significantly enhance the port's capacity for accommodating larger vessels.
